KYRGYZSTAN: Local communities improve environmental safety through eco sanitation technologies, increasing water quality and implementation of renewable energy sources

“Communications of Kyrgyzstan for Healthy Environment for All!” – under this motto Kyrgyzstan realized a project on improvement of environmental safety and sustainability in pilot communities through provision of eco sanitation technologies, safe drinking water and implementation of renewable energy sources. The project was implemented with support of the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Nuclear Safety of FRG, Environmental Movement BIOM in partnership with the international organization WECF Women of Europe for Common Future (WECF) which advocates for healthy environment for all from gender perspective. WECF offers the project activities in such areas as chemical substances, sanitation, energy and food.
The technologies and approaches introduced in pilot villages build on the principles, which were developed at the meeting in Bellagio (Italy) in February 2000. This principle, in particular, say that human dignity, life quality and environmental security at households and communities should be key to any approach addressing the environment and sanitation issues, and human biowastes should be considered as a resource.

During implementation of the project Environmental Committees were set up of village activists. The members of the Committee were introduced to the principles of environmental security, biological environment assessment methodologies and analysis of water.
The project activity also included training workshops for representatives of Environmental Committees and residents of pilot villages on environmental safety technologies. For example, master-classes were conducted on building of ecosan toilets and in Issyk-Kul oblast on assembly of solar barrels. A very useful and demanded was the master-class in Novo-Pokrovka by WECF expert on construction of a water pump from materials in hand.

It is a well-known fact that the problem of polluted water stands acute in rural area. The sources of pollution with organic matters are the toilets. To demonstrate how to build an eco-friendly toilet BIOM built Ecosan toilets for teachers and technical personnel of Novopokrovka and Chuiski secondary schools.

Ecosan Toilets do not pollute ground water, human biowaste is collected separately and safely processed in a safe way. This prevents pathogenic bacteria and parasites from entering into natural water bodies (ground water, rivers, lakes,etc.). The organic mass rich after composting can be used as fertilizer for gardens. Eco-san toilets do not have unpleasant odor and attract insects. This technology was offered and supported by WECF.

The project involved participation of local authorities. According to them in improving the lives of villagers it is important to see the linkage between the environmental and social problems of the village and find comprehensive ways for their solution.
