State of Environment
The combination of the natural and climatic conditions in Turkmenistan has shaped specific features of the national character of the Turkmen people and their attitude toward the natural environment. The disproportion in the water and thermal resources determines the low biological potential of the Turkmenistan, an impossibility to develop farming without irrigation, and the concentration of about 90% of all population and production on 10% of the country’s territory. This feature emphasises that such specificity of natural conditions in Turkmenistan makes the environmental protection more difficult. On one side, it is necessary to protect the environment on a relatively limited and intensively developed territory; on the other side, there is a problem of further development of the vast desert territory with the strict environmental demands.
