State of Environment
The state of the environment has become a pertinent issue in today’s Russia. Rapid industrialization has left a legacy of environmental pollution and nuclear waste that the country is now addressing with great concern. Russia has an abundance of natural resources, and will need to look increasingly toward the sustainable use of these resources, environmentally cleaner technologies to preserve the environment, and the promotion of energy efficiency initiatives. Further, sound environmental management in Russia is one of the critical issues particularly with regard to globally important natural ecosystems, populations and species, unique habitats, forests, wetlands, and bio-resources. The challenge is to combine these global values with benefits for the Russian economy and society. |  |
