On September 23, 2005, two public dissertation defenses took place at the Institute.
- Mr. Dmitri A. Plaksin, a competitor for a scientific degree (Kandidat geologo-mineralogicheskikh nauk, major: Hydrology), successfully defended his dissertation titled “Assessment of the pollution status of underground fresh waters in quaternary aquifers of intermontane hollows: a case study of the Chui artesian basin”; and
- Mr. Gennadii M. Tolstikhin, a competitor for a scientific degree (Kandidat geologo-mineralogicheskikh nauk, major: Hydrology), successfully defended his dissertation titled “Scientific foundations of underground water management for drinking water supply in the Kyrgyz Republic”.

The Institute and the Center for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU), in collaboration with their partner the Central Asian Institute of Earth Studies (ZAIAG), are convening an International Scientific Conference on Water Resources and Water Use in Central Asia. The Conference will take place from 9 to 13 September, 2005. The even is attended by scientists from China, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
